Basilian Church

The Basilian church of San Pancrazio

The monastery probably developed along the front of the fortress in the south-facing view of the fact that this was the only spot from which the castle could be attacked.

According to the sources (map Montemar 1734), the church attached to the monastery was a longitudinal plan and oriented toward the Strait of Messina, thereby depriving the facade of the fortress, which is believed reliable motivation for the presence of the monastery facing inland. The church's position is explained by the fact that according to the beliefs of Eastern ascetics was to serve as an antidote against the presence of the devil by the name of the mythological monster dog. Indeed, "Scylla" means "dog", a name which is indicated in the devil ascetic texts [1] .

The church, according to some documents housed in the remains of several chapels of the lords of Scylla and also shows that it was richly decorated with sacred furnishings, paintings and relics. It was demolished by Fulco Ruffo Antonio before 1773.
