Basilian Church

The Basilian church of San Pancrazio

The monastery was probably developed along the front of the rock facing south on the grounds that this was the only spot from which the castle could be attacked.

According to the sources (map Montemar 1734), the church adjoining the monastery was a longitudinal plan oriented toward the Strait of Messina, thereby depriving the rock front, for reasons which we believe reliable the presence of the monastery facing inland. The church's position is explained by the fact that according to the beliefs of Eastern ascetics was to serve as an antidote to the presence of evil mythological monster by the name of Dog. Indeed, "Scylla" means "dog", the name which is indicated in the text ascetic the devil [1] .

The church, according to some documents housed within the remains of several chapels of Scylla and gentlemen, and it seems that this was richly decorated vestments, paintings and relics. It was demolished by Antonio Fulco Ruffo before 1773.
