The Church of the Immaculate called "Matrix" stands on an important part of the city, a place of intersection of three roads that lead to their neighborhoods. The building stands on the site of a former church dedicated to St. Mary Catholic, already documented in 1310 and it remains only a painting of the Madonna della Porta. Extended several times and severely damaged in the sixteenth century. It was rebuilt following a donation of Princess Giovanna Ruffo, becoming one of the most beautiful and richest churches throughout the province of Reggio Calabria. Unfortunately, over time, the building suffered significant damage which went to add up to those caused by the disastrous earthquake of 1908. It was several years before the church was rebuilt, the work was fully completed in 1958.
façade you can see, only survivors of the previous structures, the marble columns of the portico, formed by six Ionic columns and a statue of the Immaculate (seventeenth century).
The Church is divided into three naves, the lower end with two chapels and the largest square with a polygonal apse. The ceiling is wood trusses. The altar, in polychrome marble inlaid, comes from a Church of the Capuchin Fathers Scilla. Behind is a mosaic floor to ceiling with the representation of an Angel enlightened by the Holy Spirit and, below, glimpsed the houses of Scylla.
