general information on Scylla

Scylla is a picturesque town, situated on Calabria's Tyrrhenian coast, just 23 kilometers from the province of Reggio Calabria. It overlooks the picturesque Straits of Messina, strategic location since ancient times made of Scylla, a point disputed by various dominations. It is one of the main goals of the region. It is a country rich in folk traditions, wrapped in myth and legend that has its roots in Greek mythology. Homer in his massive work, The Odyssey, tells of two hideous monsters, Scylla and Charybdis, which accounted for two simultaneous dangers and inevitabili.Cariddi is the name given to the vortex (Shabbir) created by the current in the Straits of Messina, which represented a serious danger for the slender boats, especially when, during the frequent storms, they were beaten, the strength of the vortices originated by the current against the rocks of Calabria. Scylla was a beautiful girl with whom he had also fallen in love with the sea god Glaucus, for her, had denied the love of Circe, causing jealousy. Thus when the deity, repeatedly rejected by the young, he turned to the powerful witch cast a spell to get Scylla is capable of making available to his wishes, the wicked witch, having gained an implacable hatred against the nymph, offended and irritated decided to revenge of addressing immediately. The poor girl, unaware of the terrible fate that was destined, by entering the waters poisoned suffered a hideous transformation: while the upper part of her beautiful body remained unchanged, the lower part of the same degenerated from his groin and had six heads of fierce scary dogs barking, from the mouths equipped with three rows of sharp teeth, of which he could no longer be free. Scylla, in despair, took refuge in a natural cavern under the cliff at the Straits of Messina, sowing terror among the unwary sailors who went beyond this stretch of sea grabbing and devouring, and destroying their boats.

Moreover, in the mythical legend, Scylla was the home of the Sirens with their songs that recalled and put in difficulty the sailors.

Yet still today, walking through the ancient streets of the village, with a little 'd' imagination and creativity, you can hear those songs that echo through the waves of the sea.

In many "corners" of the country and among its buildings we can see how the past of this center has firmly traced its signs, jealously guarded by its residents. Today, a fountain located in Via Rocco Minasi, depicts the mythological monster "Scylla".

The famous Rock of Scylla surmounted by the ancient castle of the Ruffo majestically overlooking the sea and seems to dominate the 4 districts of the town: Marina Grande, Chianalea, St. George and Jeracari.
